A person suffering with halitosis will be unaware of this that he cannot detect his own bad odor not even when he exhales against his hand. He becomes aware of this only when he notices that people around him are avoiding him or anyone tells him about the bad breath. It becomes worse when u get older. The power of odor is variable and can be defined as mild, moderate, pungent, objectionable and very objectionable.

Halitosis is caused by the bacteria which produces excessive amount of volatile sulphur compounds in the mouth. Most of us suffer from this bad breath in the early morning before breakfast or tooth brushing. This is because the saliva incubates bacteria in the mouth during sleep.

Some of the preventing steps for bad breath
• Try to avoid the use of conventional breath mints because most of these breath mints contain sugar which makes it favorable for the bacteria to grow thus creating the bad breath.

• Try to use the baking soda if your mouth is feeling metallic or bitter taste. This can be done by sprinkling the baking soda on the toothbrush and then apply the toothpaste and brush. Baking soda helps to remove the acids in your mouth.

• Try to brush your tongue also.

• Try to use the TheraBreath toothpaste.

• Try to drink plenty of water to fight the bad breath.

• Try to drink a cup of green tea every day because this tea contains polyphenols which stops the growth of bacteria in your mouth thus stopping the bad breath. And also this green tea is rich in antioxidants.

• Try to keep your mouth moist by chewing the sugar free gum to increase the salivary flow.

• Try to avoid eating the meat products mainly red meat.

• Try to balance your diet with adequate intake of vitamins, particularly vitamin C. A balanced diet should include sufficient mineral content, particularly Zinc. Tomato juice reduces plaque activity and anaerobic gases.

• Clean and replace your toothbrush regularly.

• Avoid mouthwashes with flavorings, dyes, and alcohol.

• Avoid stress and seek out ways to relax and resolve stressful conditions in your life.

• Get sufficient sunlight, exercise, and sleep.

• Avoid spicy foods and those that leave residues or get stuck in the teeth (alcohol, cheese, meat, sweets).

• Quit smoking
